As a part of the Pantanl-Ecology-Project this studyanalyzed the carbon fluxes and possible disturbancesof one of the Pantanal tributaries.Different vegetation zones were compared to see whichof them can provide the most efficient organic carbonsource for the stream. Furthermore we analyzed thenutrient input over land and how it is transportedinto the river and what are the reasons for the lossof organic carbonOne of the main reasons is the erosion gully. It iscaused by agricultural land use and enhancesoxidation and leaching processes and therefore isresponsible for the loss of organic carbon. As aconsequence the stream is provided with less organicmatter, which can lead to a modified vegetation cover.In this study the negative affect of the erosiongully on the stream-floodplain-system of the CórregoTenente Amaral was shown and the need to protect itsadjacent gallery forest, so that its maintaining andspecific ecological functions can be maintained.
