This book examines a range of practical developments at the interface between urban development and education. It presents perceptions and insights from urban planning/urbanism, geography, architecture, education and pedagogy. It reflects both scientific work and practical experience, and does so from a combined German and international perspective. The book is structured along different scales on which the interfaces and interlacings between education and urban development are addressed: education and the region, the city, the city quarter and the school within a city quarter. In the broad socio-political discussion on the topic of education conducted in the last decade, it has become apparent that space and the urban context are important dimensions of education and that education is gaining importance for urban development. The coordination between the two subject areas of education and urban development requires consideration and investigation. The young field of research on education and urban development currently lacks a discussion of urban planning considerations in education, empirical research, and research from the spatial and planning sciences, as well as integrated and interdisciplinary reflection on education and urban development. In Germany as well as in an international context, there are first approaches in theory and practice to bring together the fields of urban development and education. This book fills the gap and represents those first approaches.
