In connection with the collapse of the Soviet Union,Denmark, Finland and Sweden made changes in theirforeign policies by increasing their commitments toWestern security cooperation. During the Cold War,all three states sought the greatest possiblefreedom of action in their security cooperation withthe West. This book investigates foreign policychange in these three small states between 1988 and1993. This was a period of major shift in worldpolitics, with the end of the Cold War, the rise ofthe European Union and the outbreak of the Gulf Warand the Yugoslav Civil War. Against this background, the author examines Danish, Finnish and Swedishforeign policy regarding security cooperation withinthe North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the WesternEuropean Union and the European Community. Theauthor shows, in contrast to a large body ofprevious research, that small states pay ratherequal attention to external and domesticconsiderations when making foreign policy. This bookshould be especially useful to researchers inInternational Relations or anyone else interested inthe Nordic countries and small state foreign policy.
