Operas in German

With more than 2900 new entries, the revised edition of Margaret Ross Griffel's Operas in German: A Dictionary addresses itself wholly to operas written specifically to a German text, whether the text comes from a source originally in German or from a German translation. The main body of this book provides entries on the operas themselves, rather than on musical terms, characters, composers, performers, and other personages. In this way each of the works from the earliest selection through the most contemporary is given a more thorough treatment.Four appendixes list composers, librettists, authors whose works inspired or were adapted for the librettos of the operas included in the dictionary and the sources used by the librettists, and a chronological listing of the entries in the A-Z section. This volume is designed to help the reader obtain more detailed information on the subjects it presents. Classified sections include other dictionaries and encyclopedias, performance studies, collections of plot summaries, general bibliographies on operas, sources on locales where opera premieres took place, works on the history of operas in German, and selective bibliographies on individual opera composers, librettists, producers, directors, and designers. The first index gives the main characters listed in each opera entry.
