During the course of a visit to India in 1987, Dr. Kamen became captivated by the Indian culture and history. After many return visits, this fascination with India evolved into a research dissertation that identified an oppressed group within the Indian hierarchy known as the Dalits (formerly called the Untouchables). Her research focuses on the triple oppression that exists among class, caste, and gender, and how it has affected a specific female Dalit cobbler and her family.
