Starting Skills in English Vocabulary and Grammar Part B Teacher's Book Starting Skills in English is specially designed for false beginners and remedial learners. It is divided into two parts, A and B. Students can enter the course at A or B level. Each part provides at least 150 hours' tuition. The whole course, therefore, provides at least 300 hours' tuition. There are three books in each part: Listening and Speaking, Reading and Writing, Vocabulary and Grammar. It is assumed that most users of the course will teach the books in this order, although it is not essential. The majority of the material in the third book could be set as self-study. Starting Skills in English Vocabulary and Grammar: In Part B you learn how to use 200 key words in isolation and context from the following knowledge areas: * Education * Daily Life * Work and Business * Science and Nature * The Physical World * Culture and Civilization * Technology * Art and Literature * Sports and Leisure * Nutrition and Health. In the Vocabulary section students learn about: * dependent prepositions; * modifying nouns; * capital letters; * making noun phrases; * comparative adjectives - regular/irregular; * superlative adjectives - regular/irregular; * using a or an; * possessive adjectives; * adverbs of manner; * prepositions of place/movement; * using apostrophe 's; *everybody, somebody, etc.; * improving/organizing your vocabulary; * homophones; * group words; * one word, two meanings; *say, tell, speak, talk; * reflexive pronouns; * adjectives - -end/-ed; * fixed phrases; * and countable/uncountable nouns. In the Grammar section students learn to use the following patterns: *I am going to talk to you about Africa today. *I want/would like a job ...*I want/would like to work ...*You should (not) stay at school. *What was the weather like? *It was wet./It rained. *It rained heavily. *Lake Baikal has a length of ...*The Pacific is the deepest ocean. *Hillary climbed Everest. *You could do A or B. *I gave her a present. *I gave a present to her. *'Hello,' she said to me. *She said to me, 'Hello'. *It was too long. *It was not short enough. *It made me laugh. *It made me ill. *If you are tired, you should go to bed. *If you smoke, you may get cancer. This material is aimed at students with an IELTS level of 3.0. The level of this course is equivalent to an approximate TOEFL score of 400.
